Why we must pray

Scrabble tiles spelling 'Pray' on a pink surface offer a serene message.

Despite being someone who loves studying God’s Word, I’ve often struggled with being consistent in my prayer life. But the truth is, prayer is pivotal, and Jesus expects us to pray. Before teaching the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6, Jesus says, “When you pray,” not “if you pray,” emphasizing the importance of this spiritual discipline.

So, why is prayer so crucial? For me, it’s about understanding that God has given us dominion over the earth. As Psalm 115:16 says, “The heavens are the Lord’s, but the earth He has given to the children of men.” And in Genesis 1:26, God created humanity in His image and gave us authority over all creation, granting us dominion over the earth. This dominion means God needs our permission to intervene in earthly matters, since it is our territory.

Some might find it hard to believe that we have such authority, but God’s Word is clear. He has exalted His Word above His name (Psalm 138:2), and He watches over it to fulfill it (Jeremiah 1:12). This means we can take Him at His word when He says we have dominion over what happens on earth.

The late Dr. Myles Munroe defined prayer as “man giving God the legal right and permission to interfere in earth’s affairs.” When we pray, we’re giving God the legal right to act on our behalf on earth. God cannot act on earth unless we invite Him to act. James 4:2 even says that we have not because we do not ask. What you’ve been desiring is just a prayer away.

So, why must we pray? Because prayer unlocks God’s intervention in our lives. By praying, we exercise our authority and invite God to work in our circumstances on earth.

I understand that you might be reading this and thinking, “But I’ve prayed, and God hasn’t answered me.” There’s actually a right way and a wrong way to pray. We’ll explore effective prayer principles in upcoming blogs.

Stay blessed,
